Thanksgiving Day

2015-11-25

In the USA, there is a special festival called Thanksgiving Day, and it is celebrated every year, on the fourth of November. Today, we had an assembly in the Academic Report Hall at 4:20, and it was full of activities, to celebrate this wonderful festival.

We first sang a song with a beautiful melody and inspiring lyrics “My thankful heart, grateful to fate.....”. Most students followed the music, and some did an interesting finger performance in tune to the music. The atmosphere was electric, and all the teachers and students were smiling. We then watched a video about this festival, and a lot of students loved this.

Following this our foreign teacher, Jonathon, asked the students some questions, including “When is Thanksgiving Day?”, many students enthusiastically put up their hands to answer these questions. He also introduced some customs of Thanksgiving Day, including the fact the big family meal that Americans have on this day will include a turkey.

The Pilgrims, who were the first Europeans to go to, what is now the USA, were very silly and did not take any food, and so they were very hungry, and nearly starved. The local Native Americans were kind, and shared corn with the Pilgrims. If the Native Americans, had not helped, then the Pilgrims would have died. The Pilgrims thanked God, and the Native Americans.

So, we then had a game involving corn. Students from each class, had to pull as many kernels of corn from a corncob, and then place the kernels of corn in a bowl. Two students from each class, represented their class. It was a lot of hard work, and all the other children gave their support by shouting “Come on!!!). Some of the facial expressions were funny, as children used their fingers to pull. Some students used their ingenuity to become faster, and started to use their teeth. It was very funny, and messy. The corncobs, and the kernels of corn, looked very ugly at the end of the competition, nobody wanted to eat them. Miss Catherine, who started the game, also finished it, and said that the students who used their fingers were perfect. The game started and ended with a lot of laughter.

Finally, Jonathon told the students that it is good to say thank you to everyone and everything. Our daily lives, may be full of routine and boredom, but many people help us in our journey to adulthood, and we are not alone, and we need to share the earth with other people, to whom everything is related. So from now on, say thank you more often to everyone and everything. It will help you enjoy your life even more.
